Before the first move
The board prevents illegal moves and keeps track of turns. These are the essentials if you are jumping straight into a game.
White moves first
Players alternate one move at a time. Each piece has its own movement pattern, from the knight's jump to the rook's straight lines.
Keep your king out of check
You cannot make a move that leaves your own king under attack. If your king is checked, your next move must remove that threat.
Checkmate wins the game
Checkmate means the king is attacked and has no legal escape. The game can also end in a draw when neither side can force a win.

Can I play Chess with one friend?

Can I practise against AI?
Yes. Solo mode gives you a computer-controlled opponent whenever you want to practise.
What is the difference between check and checkmate?
Check means the king is currently attacked. Checkmate means the king is attacked and there is no legal move that can save it.

No. Open the game in a modern browser, choose a name, and start playing.
